Grow Your Own

Monthly Tips

Tidy Herbaceous borders. Remove any supporting canes and store them under cover.  Cut back dead stems close to the crown.  Weed the soil and fork in fish, blood and bone meal or pelleted chicken manure to boost the growth for next year.

Plant Vegetables.  Sow summer cauliflower and allow them to germinate in a frame.  These will be ready for planting out in the spring.

Plant spring bulbs.  Now is the time to plant daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and other spring flowering bulbs.

Plant winter bedding.  Empty tired summer bedding plants from hanging baskets, tubs and borders and re-plant with winter pansy for autumn colour.

Plant.  Now is the ideal time to plant shrubs, evergreens for winter colour, hedges and trees.

Sweeping leaves.  Brush fallen leaves off at least once a week.  If you leave them they rot down into the soil and fungal diseases kill off the grass.

Fruit trees and bushes.  Prepare sites for new fruit plants and cover the soil with plastic to keep the worst of the autumn rain and cold out.

Rhododendrons and azaleas.  These should be mulched with good quality bagged mulching compost, well rotted home-made compost or manure.
